We had a very successful day of pressing in the sunshine yesterday for our first Stotfold Apple Day. Thank you to everyone that came along, to Cardona and Son for running the barbecue and especially to Stotfold Town Council for use of the car park. Why not catch us next weekend at Potton Apple Day where we will be helping press apples at the event. Details here.

It’s been a few weeks since the Working Steam Weekend, our cider is bubbling away and fermenting nicely. We managed to get 60 gallons of juice pressed over the two days even with the most changeable weather we could have hoped for. We had it all rain, sun, hail and wind. Lots of people came to watch us demonstrate our equipment and they hopefully learned something about making craft cider. It was a great opportunity to meet and network with people in the local area and beyond and hopefully we will have some more volunteers for next year. It’s our aim to start a community apple day in Stotfold and if we can generate enough interest we would love to do this next summer. If you came to our stall at this years event and would like to get involved then please drop us a message. Whether you have trees in your garden, or you would like to join us, we would love to hear from you.
Did a casual spot of pub garden pressing at the Two Brewers this afternoon. This small press will produce about 6 pints of juice per press and is a great no electricity option for producing cider. The hopper and crusher on the top minces apples whole (with a little help pushing them in) into good sized pressing chunks.
A picture of us using a press kindly brought all the way from Bristol last year is in the flyer for the Working Steam Weekend 2012, see below:
A quick thank you to all that donated apples today. Hope you can join us next weekend at the Working Steam Weekend and help with the pressing. We think it’s great that local residents want to see their apples put to good use!
We were invited to the Potton Apple Amnesty and had a great day helping press apples in the grounds of St Mary’s Church in Potton. It was also a chance for us to show off our new 42 ltr press and meet other apple enthusiasts. The event started in 2009, every year residents come and bring their spare apples from their gardens which get pulped and pressed to make local apple juice. It is an event we would very much like to replicate here in Stotfold! Apples ready to be pulped and pressed One of the many presses being used during the event. It is a Vigo cross beam press and manual crusher combination. Some Locals enjoying fresh apple juices and ciders
With some help from the Eleemosynary Charity of William Field, we have now got a larger press to use at local events. The press itself can be seen below which uses a rather heavy racket mechanism to squeeze as much juice out of the pulp as possible. Should be a lot of fun to operate this autumn.
Had a rather wet, but nonetheless pleasant day at the Jubilee ‘Picnic in the Park’ celebration. Thank you to all who stopped by for a cider and a chat. Above is a picture of our work-in-progress cross beam press.
